The Sun - What the Planets Do Part 1

Updated: Dec 6, 2024

Traditional Astrologers work with 11 main planets, each one has significant representation and archetypal energy. We use this to interpret personality traits and the energies that are present. So, let's start with the Sun.

The Glyph

The Glyph (symbol) for the Sun is a circle with a dot in the middle. The dot is said to represent the earth and the circle is the Sun orbiting around it.

The Architype

The Sun is one of the luminaries, meaning it radiates light. It can shed light on things or block light - we see this during eclipses. The Sun represents our identity, our ego and our goals and missions in life. It's what's at the centre of us. I was taught to read for my clients with the advice of "doing some of your Sun everyday". What I mean by this, is to think about the energy of your Sun sign, which are the zodiac signs (otherwise known as your star sign) such as Aries, Taurus etc and do one thing each day that connects you with that energy. For example; if your Sun sign is Gemini, you may feel more fulfilled by learning something new everyday - whether that be a soundbite of world news or starting a course. Gemini's are curious and love to learn and to communicate what they have learned to others, so this could light up the core of a Gemini Sun sign.

Your Sun sign is who you are at your core. It reminds us to grow as a person and to stand in our own light. Of course, astrology is not that simple, we all have other planets in our charts which make us feel more than one thing. So when reading a chart it always important to look at the whole chart. We are complex beings and charts represent this. So if you don't "feel" like your Sun sign, don't worry, it is still you at your core but you may have other planets which are strongly placed in your chart.

The Sun also represents "the father". Of course, not everyone may have a father or father figure in their lives, but this masculine energy can still be read and used however it resonates with the client. Depending on the placement of the Sun in the chart, it is possible to see the relationship of the person with the father or father figure/masculine energy and how this impacts or feels to them.

The Ruler

The Sun is the ruler of Leo. Each zodiac has a planet which it is ruled by. For the Sun, Leo is it's sign, therefore Leo is ruled by the Sun. This means that the Sun's activity often feels stronger to Leo's, for example eclipses may impact Leo's more than other signs (although this does depend what is going on in an individual's chart).

The Architype of Leo

We can think of Leo's as embodying the Sun's energy, brave, loyal, warm, generous and representing children/inner child energy. The best of Leo is a natural leader, where it also excels at mentoring others. It's a playful, warm, courageous and brave energy. At it's worst it's a drama queen! Keen to be in the spotlight and needy for praise and recognition, to the detriment of others, domineering them. It's a fixed fire sign. Fire is energy, passion and drive. As a fixed sign it's determined, loyal and can get a job done but can struggle with change which can lead to restricted and limited views.
